1What are Pineapple and Khóm fruits?
Pineapple and Khóm are names for a fruit with many eyes, yellow flesh, and a sweet and sour taste. Its scientific name is Ananas Comosus, and it originates from South America. It is widely grown in tropical and subtropical regions.
Pineapple and Khóm are two different names for pineapples of the same origin but different varieties. Pineapple refers to the Cayenne variety, while Khóm refers to the Queen variety.
At first glance, Pineapple and Khóm look quite similar, however, upon closer inspection, there are some differences in shape, size, color, aroma, and taste.
2How to easily distinguish Pineapple and Khóm
To distinguish between Pineapple and Khóm, you can apply the basic characteristics of each fruit!
Characteristics of Pineapple
Pineapple, the Cayenne variety, is also known as the smooth cayenne or sweet pineapple. It is large, weighing from 1.5 – 2kg/fruit, and can weigh up to 3kg. Its flowers are pink, slightly red.
The pineapple is shaped like an egg, with large eyes, shallow pits, and sparsely spaced eyes. The leaves are dark green, long, and thick, with no or very few spines. When ripe, the pineapple’s color changes gradually from the stem to the top.
The flesh of the pineapple is a pale yellow, not as intense as the Khóm, juicy, with a sweet and sour taste that blends harmoniously, and has a very characteristic aroma.
Characteristics of Khóm
Khóm, the Queen variety, also known as the spiny pineapple, is one of the most common pineapple varieties grown in Vietnam, especially in the Mekong Delta. Khóm is smaller than Pineapple, weighing only 500 – 900g/fruit.
The flowers of Khóm are pinkish-green. Khóm has a slender shape, small, protruding eyes, deep pits, and denser eyes than Pineapple. The leaves are dark green, with many spines on the edges, narrow and stiff blades, and white veins running parallel on the inside.
When Khóm starts to ripen, it changes from green to yellow evenly from the stem to the top. The flesh is a beautiful deep yellow, with a characteristic aroma, a blend of sweet and sour, but with a richer sweetness.
